Galaxy Note Firmware Upgrade

My Note, that I got in May 2012, came with Gingerbread. Since then ICS and JB have been rolled out. My Note is locked to Digicel and probably tied to this region. I get no update when checking for OTA updates. The other option is to use Kies. However I've been running Windows 8 64 bit for a while now and only recently has Kies been made compatible. I downloaded and installed and got the following error "the ordinal 7170 could not be located in the dynamic link library". I did some digging around and found this error was related to the mfc90u.dll file and that I should replace the one in the Windows system folder with the one in the Kies folder. I read where these files belong to the (Visual) C/C++ runtime and/or MFC library. In the end I got the firmware upgrade to work. Some of the screens take a long while to appear so I had to be patient. Also don't touch, move or disconnect the phone during the upgrade process.

Please share with us your experience with the upgrade process in the comments below.

  1. I got my Galaxy Note unlocked in April 2012 with gingerbread 2.3.6 and did not get the OTA upgrade to ICS. That had to be done with Kies. I eventually got the upgrade to 4.0.1. Surprisingly, just last week I woke up to an OTA update notification and needless to say I did not hesitate.

  2. I also got the same error that the ordinal 7170 could not be located in the dynamic link library. I have not much know-how about it so I asked one of my friend and he resolved the issue.
